Comprehensive assessments performed by allied health professionals are known as functional capacity assessments or FCAs for short. These are often performed for individuals with disabilities who receive assistance through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). They are also completed by those who receive funds through other schemes.
You and the activities you engage in on a daily basis are the basis for an occupational therapy evaluation called a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA). In order to determine the best support for you both now and in the future, it is guided by you and your family in your natural surroundings.
The OTs conduct an FCA. They will consider a variety of factors during the assessment, including anything that you, your family, and/or support system consider significant for your life.
The FCA gives the person and occupational therapist a solid grasp of what to recommend in terms of interventions and supports. This framework helps people manage everyday tasks on their own and gives them the confidence to pursue their ambitions.
For participants in the NDIS, the FCA is essential to obtaining the appropriate amount of money and support suited to their individual goals and requirements. Individuals are enabled to access the resources necessary for significant advancement and long-term success through this customized examination.
The Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) encompasses a range of activities essential to daily living, providing a comprehensive picture of the supports needed to achieve independence and fulfil personal goals.
Key areas of focus during an FCA include:
- Learning
- Communication
- Self-Care
- Social Participation
- Mobility
- Self-Management
What does a functional capacity assessment entail?
For NDIS members, the Functional Capacity Assessment is a systematic and supportive procedure that guarantees you acquire the specialized help you need. What to expect is as follows:
- Preliminary Contact: Your journey begins when a referral and pertinent background information are provided to your occupational therapist (OT). Giving the occupational therapist comprehensive information, such as past reports, aids in their early understanding of your particular needs. In the first session, the occupational therapist will explain the goal of the assessment and get your permission.
- Assessment Scheduling: You will schedule visits and choose the best evaluation methods together with your occupational therapist. Key categories defined by the NDIS, such as learning, mobility, communication, social participation, and self-care, are the focus of the assessment. The tools that are used are routine assessments, observations, interviews, and medical records reviews.
- Assessment Process: Here, the OT gathers detailed information on your physical, cognitive, sensory, and psychosocial abilities, as well as your home and community environments. The NDIS aims to understand how daily tasks impact you across different settings, so sharing openly helps your OT fully support you. With your consent, they may also consult your support network.
- Functional Capacity Evaluation: Your occupational therapist evaluates your abilities, limitations, and the elements influencing your engagement in day-to-day activities, taking into account the impact of your environment and impairment on your objectives.
- Goals and Support Needs: You and your occupational therapist will talk about your short- and long-term NDIS goals, determining what tools, supports, or techniques are necessary to improve your daily living.
- Report Compilation: The OT compiles findings into a thorough report that includes findings, suggestions, and pertinent details about your objectives and needs.
- Suggestions: Based on your individual goals, the report makes detailed suggestions for occupational therapy assistance and NDIS funding.
- Final Report: You will discuss any concerns and finalise the report with your occupational therapist during the next appointment. You will receive a copy, as will any permitted contacts.
This customised evaluation seeks to assist you in achieving a happy life with the appropriate assistance at every stage.
Having a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) report provides numerous benefits for NDIS participants, as it offers a clear, evidence-based understanding of an individual’s abilities, support needs, and goals. Here’s how it can be particularly beneficial:
- Personalized Support Recommendations
- Justification for NDIS Funding
- Clarity on Functional Limitations and Strengths
- Goal Setting and Progress Tracking
- Enhanced Communication with Providers
- Empowerment and Advocacy
In short, an FCA report provides a structured, objective basis for accessing and maximizing NDIS support, helping ensure that every aspect of your daily life and future goals are met with the right level of assistance.
How Long Does a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) Take?
The duration of an FCA varies, depending on several factors:
- Travel Requirements

- Home Visits
- Interviews with Family and Other Stakeholders
