Starting speech
therapy is a big step in supporting your child’s communication journey. But
did you know that what happens outside of sessions is just as important
as what happens inside them?
At Wellness Experts, we work closely with families to
make sure every session — and every effort at home — counts. Whether your child
is working on speech sounds, social skills, or feeding challenges, these tips
will help you maximise progress and feel more confident along the way.
1. Decide Whether to Stay or Step Out
At the start of therapy, you may wonder if you should stay
in the room. For some children, having a parent present helps them feel more
secure. For others, it’s a distraction. Speak with your speech therapist to
decide what’s best. Either way, be sure to spend a few minutes after each
session reviewing what was covered and how you can continue the learning at
home.
2. Make Home Practice a Daily Habit
Therapy doesn’t end when the session ends. In fact, daily
practice at home — even just 10–15 minutes — makes a huge difference. Think
of it like brushing teeth: a little each day is far better than one long
session once a week. Your therapist will give you simple exercises or games you
can incorporate into your routine.
3. Ask Questions and Stay Curious
Not sure what a certain term means? Wondering why a specific
sound or activity is being used? Ask! Good communication between parents and
therapists is key. We’re here to help you feel confident, informed, and
supported.
4. Share What You Know About Your Child
You know your child better than anyone. Let us know what
motivates them, what routines work best, or what may be causing stress. These
insights help us personalise therapy sessions and create more engaging,
effective activities.
5. Involve Family, Teachers, and Carers
Speech therapy works best when it’s supported in all
environments — not just the clinic. If your child is in school or has carers,
involve them in the process. Share your child’s goals, show them the activities
you’re working on, or invite them to a session. A united team leads to better
results.
6. Offer Encouragement and Positive Feedback
Every sound your child attempts is progress worth
celebrating. Recognise and praise their efforts, especially when they use
target words or sounds outside of therapy. Even small improvements build
confidence and motivation.
7. Display Goals at Home
It’s easy to lose track of therapy goals during a busy week.
One great way to stay focused is by keeping the goals visible. Stick them on
the fridge, bathroom mirror, or a whiteboard in your child’s room. This gentle
reminder helps keep everyone on the same page.
8. Bring Therapy Materials to Each Session
Your therapist may provide folders, worksheets, or
flashcards — and these tools are meant to travel with your child. Bring them to
each session so we can track progress, build on past work, and update goals
when needed.
9. Stay in Touch Between Sessions
Has your child started saying a new word? Are they showing
signs of frustration? These moments matter. Keep an open line of communication
with your therapist so strategies can be adjusted and celebrated accordingly.
10. Stay Committed and Consistent
Finally, consistency is everything. While life can get busy,
sticking to regular appointments and daily practice will produce stronger,
faster results. Therapy is a process, but with your support, your child will
build the skills they need to thrive.
